Regarding sharing writing online, I can not tell how my first impressions of this forum were a year ago before even I had signed up for it.Threads were like scandals to me, and members were like people exposing themselves!! This might be a bit exaggeratedly written, but anyway I was not to be blamed of that as a person who looked at writing as a private personal act. Especially, knowing that I had at a young age a skill of reading people's characters through their writings.

Thanks God, this has all changed by now. Many factors contributed to this change. Some of these factors are:

  1.  I am older now. In comparison to my early teenage, things are more settled...vision is clearer. Consequently, writing has a new role in my life that is less personal and more social.

  2. I grew up as a confident person and an English learner who don’t mind sharing and laughing at her universal mistakes or misconceptions.

  3. I figured out that I am not obliged to be personal the moment I write, for writing can be personal and impersonal. ( it may sound common sense to someone who obtains a different view from what I used to).

  4. I came to believe strongly that sharing means learning.

Online writing is a good opening for the cooperation among many students and learners of the language everywhere. It will let the world be a small area of interaction and people of the area will be neighbors, but those neighbors miss the spiritual relations in between them and of different customs and traditions.

Despite that one of the most adequate ways of writing is the online writing, it lets learners communicate with their colleagues all over the world and a lot of learners will be able to interact in a few minutes as they’re acquiring the experience of mutual work. Moreover, their writing will be evaluated and they will get quick responses and comments on theirs.

Through the online writing one can talk to native speakers and that property lets foreign learners use the language in a proper way which leads them to be accurate and correct. One also can deduce the cultural backgrounds of those with whom he communicates as well as their notions and ideas.

Online writing makes one express his feelings, thoughts and attitudes without any sort of shyness, and lets one move from being an introvert person to be sociable and extrovert one. It’s also a chance for the talented to show their talents. In addition, in discussing current issues on global problems one will be so frank direct and open and it is a chance to persuade the obstinate people with our opinions and defend our beliefs.

-- I think it is time for our teachers and universities in Arab World to consider online ýcollaboration. I have never shared my writing with my classmates in traditional ýlearning for many reasons; the first is the number of students who wish to learn from ýeach other but do not find the mean to do so. The second is that many students like me ýdo not want to use and discus their writing because they write with the pen and if ýthere are any changes it would be hard to them to rewrite the whole thing. ý

I think now I can share my papers with my pals and then take their suggestion for the ýchanges and change it electronically in a very simple manner. This is one reason I ýthink students should practice typing and then learn to share writing to get feedback. ý

Sharing writing is one thing I start to love. I used to write for my teacher only. No ýfeedback at all, Now with OWCp, I write to you guys as you do write to me and we ýshare ideas and feelings as you mentioned. I think this is great and we should inform ýour friends to come and use this website because through my little participations so ýfar, I can tell you that I learned from your posted topics many vocabularies, many ýwiring styles and I learned how to share my writing and also give comments to my ýfriends wiring. ý

ý I can say frankly that I learn more effectively as you mentioned than I do learn in my ýEnglish classroom that lacks motivation and encouragement to improve your writing. ý

As for the advantages of sharing on line, it is so many. Sharing on line helps us to recognize the ideas of the other people in many countries and it enables us to know different culture and civilization. It is believed that to avoid the cunning of any people, you should know their language, culture, civilization, and their way of thinking. Writing on line gives us the chance to know new friends and make many relationships, this is clear by sending messages which express our ideas.

Does sharing our writing here in OWCp improve our writing?

I think that the freedom such forums offer does not always facilitate for the expected learning to happen. In other words, we usually emphasize that our label is “We write as we speak” that is meant to lessen the tension that worrying over the correctness of the form might cause. It does not at all mean totally ignoring the form, the thing that we often do. I think that sharing our writing here helps us improve our language but not necessarily our writing . Sometimes we tend to apply “we write as we speak” literally in our interaction which make our writing appear to be as written speech rather than writing. It is true that writing is considered as social dialogue. Yet, it has its own merits that distinguishes it from speech.

The relation between talk , speech, and text in interaction and reflection in computer meditated group discussion, like OWCp, is explained by Dimatteo(1990) as the following: “They, learners, create intensely visible language out of what they consider to be forgettable, facile words their own talk and conversations. They develop a sense that when they talk, they are “Drafting” themselves, composing their own identities through a speech that is also writing made utterly tangible”

Thus we are supposed to consider our writing here as tidying up our own words. Unlike face-to-face conversations, we have a chance to think , reflect, and organize our words by writing them in a well-organized form. Applying the basics of writing would change our words from a written speech to a well-composed written piece.

I hope that I will not be misunderstood as emphasizing content rather than the form. My point is that content comes first but form is also important. For example, the guidelines of writing an essay or paragraph should be employed because it helps in conveying our thoughts properly.

Drafting plays a very important role in developing healthy writing habits. In the first stages of drafting matters of the form should not be given any attention as not to distract the ongoing process of discovery that is writing. It is considered a process of discovery because while writing we discover what we want to say and what thoughts and ideas we have in our minds. However, in the last stages of this process the matters of the form should be paid some attention.

As a writer I used to revise in a very limited way. I used to write two draft . The second ,the last, is not more than copying the first one considering some changes that has to do with form. .Changing the content would take place during writing the first draft. I would discuss a point . Then I read it before I get into the second one and change it If I did not like it or I felt that I do not know how to link it with the second one. So, I was trying to make my written work a unit from the first time I start writing and that definitely made writing a difficult task. That also hindered the progress of the writing that I feel held back by worrying over linking the parts.

When I could understand that writing is a process especially the fact that writing is not a linear process, I could make use of drafting. I started to write about anything that has to do with my topic. I would write several paragraphs or chunks of discourse that are not connected or organized in a logical order. Once I feel that wrote all the ideas I have, I would start writing the second draft including that most relevant ideas that would help forming a coherent unit. Then comes editing and it usually took my utmost effort.

As I joined the OWCp, I started to draft my work efficiently. I usually draft my written work several times to ensure its clarity and coherence. Frankly, I am not a confident writer especially when posting my writing online. Drafting and revising several times give me the confidence required to decide to post my written work. When I draft and revise, I assure that I did my best and even if it was not that good I have got to share it if I really want to improve my writing.

The number of drafts depends on my familiarity with the topic I am writing about. However, most of the time I draft three times. The first one is written in which I jot down all the things I have in mind. After finishing I read it . Then I start typing the second one without going back to the first one. The second is usually messy but better than the first one. Then comes the third one in which I tidy up the second draft .I may copy and paste some parts and change others. The final draft is the one that is going to be posted .

One of the main benefits I got from sharing online is the ability to isolate myself from the written text. It is believed that isolating oneself from his/her own written work and projecting the reader’s role enable the writer to evaluate his/her work critically. By posting anything I wrote, I could , to some extent, achieve the isolation that could be rarely achieved before posting. Once, I post it I can sense weaknesses in the style or the lack of support of some ideas and things of the like. The longer the period between posting and revising the more it helps in noticing deficiencies in my writing. Most of the time, I could not come up with some alternatives but at least that helped me know what aspects of my writing need to be improved.

Finally, I would like to share my second typed draft of this post . I hope it would help in clarifying things . Please do not forget to download the attached file .

--Having peers from different countries motivates me to share my culture and religion. It is nice to introduce such topics in one writings. And in the same time I feel that I am forever waiting for them to share the same, because it is really nice to read others perspectives on life, especially when those others are from places different from yours

-- It is through collaboration we will grow and we will be among the leaders of collaborative learning as we share and care. But we will not achieve our goals if we keep the idea that a one person only is behind all these collaborative efforts.  No, I want you please to be aware of the importance of each member’s role here. This word recognition comes as a result of your hard work and rich contributions.

-- We are all one team and we all work to help each other learn through collaboration and communication. Learning is our major goals and creating international recognition comes next

--I am glad and happy to be a member in such project and my username in the OWCp is (XXXX)… i used a nickname at first, because I didn't want anyone to know my identity, and that gave me some sort of freedom to write whatever I want without any stress, without any fear of my mistakes, and when I felt I am ready to use my real name.. I used it

Sharing our Cities

Saudi Arabia

Everybody knows that Saudi Arabia, is a desert kingdom, in the Arabian Peninsula. But, only 3/4 of Saudi Arabia is desert.....how about the rest?...Desert? No...guess again!

The Southern Region of Saudi Arabia is moutainous, which is almost rainy all the season, especially in the summer and spring. It stretches from the Northern borders of Yemen, to Al-Hijaz region. As for the mountains, they are called Al-Sarawat Mountains, which stretches from the South of the Arabian Peninsula, to the borders of Jordan. Anyway, many people have this wrong idea that, Saudi Arabia, is a desert land, full of three things: camals, Bedwins, and oil !. However, no one would believe there is a rainy region, or there are mountains, some greeny ones. Once, a foriegn teacher asked the students to talk about their home towns in their countries, we were from different countries; when my turn came, I told them I came from a mounainous rainy area, that was misty all summer. Well, my teacher knows I am from Saudi Arabia, and this kept here quiet, as if she were thinking. "Is this true?!" with a look, you could know that she didn't believe me, a question which didn't need an answer. The class ended, and I was still thinking about that look. I couldn't do anything about it, so I left it behind me. Now I remembered that "look" again, and I ask you: Do people think that Saudi Arabia is a land of desert...only? is this view changed, or not?...

Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a very beautiful country in Europe. It is situated on the Balkan Peninsula and has an outlet on the Black Sea. We have wonderful nature – mountains and planes, rivers and lakes, beaches and ski resorts, as well as ancient history and culture. Bulgaria is most famous for its yogurt and rose oil. Its nickname is “the land of the roses”. I should also mention the incredible Bulgarian folklore. Here are some pictures from my country to enjoy.

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Jeddah downtown
 Hello, My OWCp folks

I liked the idea of sharing images and information about our hometowns. I think this would help us understand each other well and it gives us more ideas on how people of these cities live, how do they think and what do they do for living.

I am going in this topic to present my most lovable city Jeddah. Jeddah "the pearl of the Red sea" is the largest city in Saudi Arabia's Western region. It is the most active city in the Middle East too; lot of shopping centers, huge stores, and very endless chain entertainment resorts located on the sea shore.

When you visit  Jeddah for the first time, you would notice that it is hard to differentiate between day time and night time, since the city night is changed into a day time due to the fact most of the  Jeddah people prefer to work and do shopping during the night time. Another reason, is the strong lights which make Jeddah one of the most brightened cities in the word during night time.

You will also find that huge and uncountable shopping centers located in every street of the city are full of people all night. Restaurants are full also of customers especially those ones located at sea shore and serve sea food. You would really like to eat there and enjoy the night time in these restaurants with Jeddah people who prefer night time for these activates  to avoid the high  humidity during the day time..

History of Jeddah and its population.

The name of the Jeddah in Arabic means seashore.  Jeddah represents to the fast development of Saudi Arabia as a whole country. According to my father who came to Jeddah in the 50s from his small city village near Taif City ( another beautiful city in Saudi Arabia) he said " Jeddah was no more than one square kilometer, and its population was less than one hundred thousands. Now Jeddah is a huge city. Its population is over two million people.

Jeddah is the KSA's  principal seaport. Thus it is the gateway to Makkah and Madinah for pilgrims arriving by sea. Jeddah every year welcomes all pilgrims arriving by sea or by air. Jeddah for this reason becomes the place for huge demands on consumer goods, building materials, hotel accommodation, and others. Those pilgrimages come KSA every year from all over the globe to perform Hajj. ( Pilgrimage; the journey to Makkah)

Jeddah's Corniche is one of the city's most impressive and pleasing features. It is the longest sea shore in the middle east or even in the world. Jeddah sea shore is a three-part corniche, 20 miles in length. It is decorated with many recreational facilities and provided with superb views of the sea for  visitors.

I like to go at the sunset to the Cornice. I love to see the sun when it setting. At this time of the day you see Jeddah young men and families do lot of sea sport.

Jeddah at sunset

Jeddah Fountain

In this picture on the left, You see the  Jeddah fountain, which  rises some 853 feet (260 meters high) from the sea off Jeddah. This jet of water is the highest of its type in the world. You would really love to see that at night when you are flying over the Jeddah Sea shore. Once you see this, it will never be a forgettable sight. More images would be added to see the fountain at night.

 Thank You

I hope you enjoyed reading about my home City. You may ask me questionsabout Jeddah.. I will answer you and give you a good tour

Burgas – a Place to Remember‎

This is a brief story about my home town. I enclose some pictures and I hope you will enjoy them.

My name is Rosica and I am from Burgas, Bulgaria – a city situated on the coast ‎of the Black Sea. I think that the location of my hometown is one of the factors, which ‎lead me to choosing a future in the USA. Burgas is a major tourist center and I was in ‎touch with many different cultures. My city is very opened to the world, to the new ‎changes. I will now tell you something more about my beautiful city and show you some ‎pictures.‎

The whole history of Burgas is connected with the sea. The location of the city, ‎surrounded by water from three sides, is the basic reason for its foundation and ‎development. Burgas is noticed by the Europeans for the first time in 18th century – it was ‎the most important port in this part of the Balkan Peninsula. At that time Bulgaria is ‎under the Turkish yoke and is not developed like the other European countries. Colonel ‎Lermontov liberates Burgas on 06 February 1878. The architectural landscape of the city ‎is quite gloomy: muddy streets, many sea warehouses, scattered with no order, half-‎destroyed buildings. But Burgas quickly develops during the first decade of 20th century. ‎The construction of the central part of the city begins with a beautiful sea garden, some ‎other gardens, and a large casino on the beach, a big market, a Chamber of Commerce. A ‎railroad is finished. In the first decades of the century the city develops very rapidly its ‎industry, banking, culture and education. During the second half of the 20th century ‎Burgas becomes a major industrial center and a tourist area with international fame.‎

Burgas is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria, situated in the southeastern part of ‎the country. The climate here is temperately continental with a distinct impact from the ‎Black Sea. One of the biggest industrial plants on the Balkan Peninsula, Neftochim-EAD, ‎is located in the vicinity of the city. The Port of Burgas is the biggest seaport in the ‎country. A Duty Free Zone was established in 1989 with the objective to create most ‎attractive conditions for foreign investors. The favorable geographical location and ‎advanced transport infrastructure of Burgas are good prerequisites for development of ‎tourism and trade. The city’s airport is also the biggest in Bulgaria.‎

Burgas is not only an important industrial center in the country; it has also ‎considerable resources for tourism. What attracts people here mostly is undoubtedly the ‎sea. The city is a starting point for visiting the seaside resorts in the area - The Slantchev ‎Bryag resort (the largest sea resort in the country), The Elenite holiday village to the ‎north and The Duni holiday village, renowned for its unique architectural composition, to ‎the south. On the territory of Burgas municipality there are 2 universities and 4 colleges ‎comprising more than 6200 Bulgarian and foreign students.

Another thing I take pride in is the so-called “Flora”. It is an exhibition of ‎different flowers and is visited by people from all over Europe. It is held in May when we ‎have our famous tulips growing.‎
I think these are the most important things about my city. Now I am enclosing ‎some pictures, which will show you different sides of the city itself.‎

WELCOME TO EGYPT

They arrived the last stair of Cairo tower, the friends began to talk about the journey and its enjoyment, but she kept at a distance step by step from her friends. He followed her with his eyes. Then he approached to her and found that she was sighing and looking at Egypt from the upper of the tower .He said to her " why do you look at her like this." She replied "I'm dazzled, although I didn't visit any country but her, I'm sure that she is the most beautiful place on the earth. Is there any country talks about herself when you look at from a high tower as her? . If you see her pyramids, you'll find that they talk about her forefathers and their haughtiness, which daze the world, and if you look at her Nile, it'll tell you about the brownness of her sons. Her mosques, churches, and her streets all talk to you about her power and glory." She silenced looking at a calm smile of a tourist and continued "look at this beautiful tourist and her magic smile, the smile of each visitor comes to Egypt is a signature on a certificate of valuation on her beauty." He looked at the tourist and said, " Do you know that you are similar to Egypt?" She " me, how?" He " she has a Nile, if any one drinks from, he'll return to her and you have eyes, if anyone look at, he'll long for you. Her pyramids point to her greatness, and your speech shows that you are educated and skillful. And when anyone visits her, a beautiful smile will appear on his lips and so do I, when I Look at Your face. You are her, and she is you."
